Introduction

The analysis results presented below were obtained by applying various analysis techniques to data extracted from the apparatus of the fourth edition of the United Bible Societies Greek New Testament (Aland et al. 2011) (= UBS4). The fourth rather than fifth edition is used because the great task of encoding the data was done by Richard Mallett (now deceased) around 2011. The differences between the apparatuses of Mark in the fourth and fifth editions are unlikely to make a significant difference to the results.

Analysis methods

The code used to analyse the data is written in the R statistical programming language (R Core Team 2024). The code is contained in a package named ANTTV.code (Finney 2023) written for analysis of New Testament textual variation. The package employs a number of packages written by other authors: ape (Paradis and Schliep 2019), cluster (Maechler et al. 2023), and rgl (Murdoch and Adler 2023). The data itself, encoded by Richard Mallett, is available from my ANTTV.data repository (Finney 2024). Witnesses are labelled with strings based on their sigla in the apparatus. For convenience of processing, superscripts are levelled by inserting hyphens; for example, copbo becomes cop-bo.

The ANTTV.code package uses a pipe and filter architecture for processing, as shown in the following diagram. Pipes feed data from one stage to the next via filters (i.e. processing methods).

Data matrix

Processing normally begins with a data matrix, which is a table-like structure that provides the textual states of a number of witnesses at a number of variation sites. The data matrix is obtained by encoding textual states (i.e. using numerals or letters to represent readings), with each row representing the readings of a witness at the set of variation sites included in a critical apparatus. (The symbol NA is used when the state of a witness is not available because its reading is not known at a particular variation site.)

A data matrix for the UBS4 Greek New Testament Gospel of Mark is included in the package. It was encoded by Richard Mallett and has 267 rows (for witnesses) and 142 columns (for variation sites). Its dimensions are obtained by piping the data matrix into an R function named dim(), which returns the number of rows and columns in a table. (The |> symbol is the R pipe operator. The entire data matrix can be seen by typing Mark.UBS4 at the R command prompt.)

Reduction

The data matrix is then reduced to drop witnesses which have too few defined states (i.e. variation sites at which the readings are known). The purpose of this processing step is to eliminate witnesses that might skew results because their remaining states misrepresent the actual textual character of the witness. To illustrate why this is a prudent approach, consider a witness who agrees with your testimony 75% of the time. The R binomial random variate function rbinom() can be used to generate responses where there is a 75% chance of answering TRUE:

If a number of these are chosen at random then there is a chance of choosing a majority of FALSE responses even though the majority are actually TRUE. One would then be under the impression that the witness disagrees most of the time. In a similar way, surviving states of a fragmentary witness may misrepresent the actual textual nature of the witness as it was when fully intact. The chance of this undesirable outcome increases as the number of surviving states decreases.

The reduction step (implemented by do_reduction()) drops witnesses with less than an acceptable number of known states. I have chosen fifteen as the minimum acceptable number of defined states but users are free to choose another number if desired. (The chosen number is a compromise between wanting to include fragmentary witnesses and wanting to avoid skewed results. Given fifteen coin flips, there is about one chance in thirty of getting less than 25% or greater than 75% heads when the actual probability of heads is 50%. In the same way, given two witnesses with an actual agreement rate of fifty percent, there is about one chance in thirty that a random selection of fifteen places to compare will produce an agreement rate of less than 25% or greater than 75%.)

Applying do_reduction() to the data matrix for Mark’s Gospel reduces the number of witnesses from 267 to 65; all of the remaining ones have at least 15 defined states:

Distance matrix

A distance matrix gives the distance between each possible pairing of a set of witnesses. It has the same number of rows and columns, one for each witness. Here the distance matrix is produced by function do_dist() which calculates the simple matching distance (i.e. number of states which differ divided by the number of states at which both witnesses are defined). The result is a 65 by 65 matrix of inter-witness distances:

The matrix – only part of which is shown due to R function head() – is symmetric because the distance from a witness X to a witness Y is the same as the distance from Y to X. Also, the diagonal is entirely comprised of zeros because each witness is a distance of zero from itself.

Analysis methods

The analysis methods used here often operate on a distance matrix. (It is possible to convert a table of percentage agreements to a distance matrix using function do_PA_to_dist().) However, there are occasions when properties of the data matrix need to be considered when producing a result. Examples include results that rely on statistical values based on numbers of defined variation sites or that require random sampling of data matrix columns.

Ranked distances

Function do_rank() operates on a data matrix and ranks witnesses by distance from a given witness, repeating the process for each witness. Distances that are unlikely to occur by chance are marked with an asterisk. Critical distances (i.e. boundaries between likely and unlikely distances) are estimated using the binomial quantile function qbinom(), probabilities of 0.025 and 0.975 (to produce a 95% confidence interval), and the mean probability of disagreement among witnesses in the relevant row of the distance matrix. The function operates on a data matrix rather than distance matrix because it has to count numbers of defined states when calculating critical distances. The function calculates the distance matrix internally before producing its output.

Taking the first row as an example, the UBS text is adjacent to (i.e. significantly near) B, 2427, Psi, L, Aleph, cop-bo, cop-sa, 892, and Delta. (Due to some fine detective work, minuscule 2427 is now known to be spurious; it is included here because it is in the UBS4 apparatus.) At the same time, the UBS text is opposite to (i.e. significantly far from) it-d, f-13, it-r-1, it-i, D, it-a, it-b. Using conventional categories, the UBS text could be described as Alexandrian and non-Western. Taking the Armenian version (arm) as another example, near neighbours include geo, 565, syr-s, f-1, syr-p, f-13, and 700. Apart from the Syriac versions, these are all members of the Caesarea category listed in Streeter’s table of The MSS. and the Local Texts (Streeter 1953, 108). At the other end of the spectrum, the Armenian version is unlike texts such as UBS, Aleph, 2427, it-k, and B. It could therefore be characterized as Caesarean and non-Alexandrian.

Classical multidimensional scaling

Function do_CMDS() applies classical multidimensional scaling to the distance matrix obtained from the data matrix, calculating a set of witness coordinates such that differences between the inter-witness distances in the distance matrix and resulting plot are minimized:

Concentrations of texts are visible and these correspond to known textual groups. Using conventional labels, the textual space is comprised of a tight Byzantine cluster along with more diffuse Caesarean (geo, arm, syr-s, W, f-1, 28, 205, 565, f-13, Theta), Old Latin (it-b, it-i, D, it-ff-2, it-c, it-r-1, it-a, it-d), and Alexandrian (cop-sa, Psi, L, Delta, cop-bo, UBS, Aleph, B, 2427) ones. Some texts lie between clusters. Regions between the Caesarean, Old Latin, and Alexandrian clusters have few occupants. The lack of witnesses in these regions suggests that Caesarean-Old Latin, Caesarean-Alexandrian, and Old Latin-Alexandrian hybrids were seldom produced, though there are a few exceptions to this rule. By contrast, regions between these three clusters and the Byzantine cluster are well populated. To give one instance, Augustine, it-q, it-l, it-aur, vg (= Vulgate), and it-f form a region of higher textual density located between the Old Latin and Byzantine clusters. If the Old Latin cloud represents the Latin manuscripts Jerome began with then the Vulgate’s location suggests that the old Greek codices consulted during his revision were of the Byzantine type. (Igitur haec praesens praefatiuncula pollicetur quattuor tantum evangelia … codicum graecorum emendata conlatione sed veterum. Jerome, Letter to Pope Damasus.)

The R-squared value at the bottom of the rotating plot indicates how well it reproduces the distance information contained in the distance matrix. Possible values range from zero (uncorrelated) to one (perfect correlation).

Divisive clustering

Function do_DC() does divisive clustering, which splits an initial cluster containing all of the items into smaller and smaller clusters until each final cluster has one member. The result is a dendrogram (i.e. tree diagram) with the group of all witnesses forming the root and individual witnesses forming the leaves. Each branching point is called a node.

A number of the clusters observed in the CMDS result recur as branches in the DC tree. One difference is that DC analysis places 565 and Theta with Latin rather than Caesarean witnesses. Referring back to the CMDS result, 565 and Theta do seem pulled toward the Latin region of textual space. (They, along with Old Latin k (it-k), are among the few examples of witnesses located between non-Byzantine clusters.) Clustering techniques cannot put texts in two places at once – a witness is assigned to the branch where it fits best (according to the technique’s algorithm) even if the witness shares affiliation with members of another branch. A small perturbation in the distance matrix can result in translocation of such a witness to another branch. By contrast, CMDS will place an item with mixed affiliations in an appropriate location between its nearest clusters.

The divisive coefficient shown at the bottom of the DC diagram is a number ranging from zero to one that indicates the degree of clustering in the data. The closer the value is to one, the greater the degree of clustering.

Analysis methods that produce a tree as the output can be used to partition the constituents into a number of groups. This type of classification is achieved by drawing a horizontal line across the tree at some height. For example, cutting the above DC tree at a height of 0.65 on the vertical axis produces the following five-way partition:

Neighbour joining

Function do_NJ() performs neighbour joining, which begins with a star-like tree of items then adds internal nodes at points determined by the neighbour-joining algorithm.

In terms of conventional categories, the four branches radiating from the centre are recognizable as Caesarean (top), Western (right), Alexandrian (bottom), and Byzantine (left). Similar groups are visible as clusters in the CMDS result and as branches in the DC and NJ results.

A scale model of the NJ tree could be made by joining pieces of string so that witness labels are located at the tips and internal nodes are at the right positions to correctly represent the branch lengths found in the diagram. Any witness could then be selected as the root by picking up its label and looking at the tree formed as the structure falls into its new configuration. If the selected witness is indeed closest to the initial text then the resulting tree would be a more or less accurate representation of the history of development of the New Testament text.

The actual location of the root is not known though many would place it near the UBS text. However, if no particular branch in the analysis result is favoured at the outset then the point from which the major branches radiate would seem to be a natural choice for the common source. That would make texts such as the Ethiopic, Syriac Peshitta, minuscule 700, and minuscule 33 the closest we have to the initial text of the Gospel of Mark. While very few in the field would accept these as closest to the root, it is noteworthy that an entire major branch can be dropped – perhaps because its members are regarded as secondary – without making much difference to which witnesses are nearest neighbours of the central point. On the other hand, location near the central point would also be expected of later hybrids of the major groups.

While often retaining its main features, the topology of the NJ tree can be quite sensitive to small changes in the distance matrix. (This is true of all methods for deriving a tree, including genealogical techniques.) One way to check the degree of sensitivity is through a method known as bootstrapping. (I am grateful to Pasi Hyytiäinen for pointing this out to me.) Please see (Felsenstein 2003) for an explanation of the technique, which involves repeated sampling (with replacement) of the data matrix columns to produce many distance matrices and resulting trees. This allows well supported tree topologies to be identified.

Function do_NJ_support() works directly on the data matrix to produce a tree diagram that incorporates support values:

Some of the nodes (i.e. branching points) are well supported, appearing in more than 50 percent of the data matrix cases produced through bootstrap sampling. However, others are poorly supported, some occurring in five percent of cases or less. Not much confidence can be placed in results like these.

One way out of the quandary is to include only those nodes supported in a majority of data matrices produced by bootstrapping. Function do_NJ_consensus() implements this approach:

While more robust than a tree produced without bootstrapping, this outcome does little to clarify wider genealogical relationships among the many witnesses which share few, if any, intermediate nodes.

Partitioning around medoids

Partitioning around medoids divides a set of items (in our case, witnesses) into a specified number of groups. The process identifies a medoid for each group, being the group’s most central member.

A silhouette statistic can be calculated as well to identify numbers of groups that are a natural fit for the set of items.

Function do_PAM() performs PAM analysis on a distance matrix, dividing the initial group into every number of groups between a lower (2) and upper (20) value (default values shown in parentheses). It also calculates the average silhouette width (ASW) for every number of groups. Higher values of the ASW indicate better options for the inherent number of groups.

It seems that the former leaning toward a four-way partition (i.e. Alexandrian, Byzantine, Caesarean, Western) is not the best, for this data set at least. According to the ASW value, a six-way division is among the better choices for the number of groups:

Conventional labels formerly attached to these groups are supplied in parentheses. For those familiar with past classification efforts, PAM analysis often agrees with earlier generations of New Testament textual researchers concerning which witnesses belong to which groups, even if it doesn’t agree concerning preferable numbers of groups.

Taking the twenty-way partition as another example, witnesses that are a poor fit to other groups form singletons – groups with only one member. Groups of more than one are core members of groups found in partitions with fewer divisions (i.e. those found higher up in the above table):

Conventional labels do not always exist for groups identified in a many-way partition. One option for identifying such a group is to name it after its medoid, also specifying the partitioning algorithm and number of groups (e.g. Group B (PAM, 20-way)).

Conclusion

Results have been presented pertaining to a number of analysis methods applied to textual variation data obtained from the UBS4 apparatus of Mark’s Gospel. Each analysis method presents its own view of the textual space occupied by the witnesses. The techniques allow the relative dispositions of the witnesses to be appreciated, and also provide ways to classify them into groups. Some groups identified by the analysis methods correlate with conventional Alexandrian, Byzantine, Caesarean, and Western categories. The partitioning around medoids method indicates which numbers of groups are more natural for the data set and identifies a suitable representative for each group (i.e. its medoid).
